A few days ago, my daughter sent me the following quote:
"My heart hurts for the girls that have a bad relationship with their mom because I would not last a single day without mine!"
Of course, it brought tears of joy to my eyes.
We all agree that mother-daughter relationships as adults are complex. Mothers often act like "moms know best", and daughters sometimes extend their teenagehood an extra decade!
To moms I say: be realistic. Communicate. Put yourself in her shoes. You have the right to disagree. Respect their choices and decisions. Most important: learn to listen.
To daughters I say: be respectful to your moms. Don't drag your teen age grudge with you. Agree on how you would like to communicate. Learn to forgive because your moms did it all to the best of their ability and knowledge.
"A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take".
To those who are lucky to have their mothers around, enjoy them!
